December 3 - Guybrush Threepwood

Guybrush Threepwood
Before LucasArts became as entrenched in Star Wars games as they currently seem to be, they were called Lucasfilm Games. Back in the days of the Commodore 64 and Amiga they released a large number of point and click adventure games, and the titles which most people will probably instantly recognise are The Secret of Monkey Island games.

The Secret of Monkey Island was the tale of a young man named Guybrush Threepwood, who wanted to become a mighty pirate, as he delighted in telling just about everybody he met during his quest. OK, not really the kind of piratey name that would strike fear into the heart of decent men, which was basically what everybody he met during his quest told him, if that is they could get his name right! Guybrush wasn’t really cut out to be a pirate though. Other characters he came across were forever belittling him, yet Guybrush generally never seemed to notice.

Elaine MarleyLeChuck
Guybrush’s other ambition was to woo Elaine Marley, the governor of Melee Island, the island where Guybrush begins his pirating adventures. Unfortunately, he’s not the only one with eyes for Elaine. The evil pirate LeChuck also has plans of marriage for Elaine, except he has a problem in that he is already dead…

Apart from being able to hold his breath under water for 10 minutes, Guybrush’s main skill was to become an accomplished swordsman, although we are talking about Insult Sword Fighting. Each swordsman takes it in turns to make insults to their opponent. You win the sword fight by firing back a suitable retort to the insult. Altogether now, “I am rubber, you are glue”.

I’d forgot all about Guybrush Threepwood, I remember playing Monkey Island on my Amiga and that was probably one of my most enjoyable games. Thanks for the blast from the past :)

I played the Monkey Island games on PC. I never owned an Amiga or the like. But Guybrush Treepwood, with those pshycological duels, where “I am rubber you are glue” was a sure loser, consumed a number of my life’s limited hours…

Good idea, guys! I hope you will feature Roger Wilco in a future post. Now that was a rememberable alter ego, cleaning where no man has cleaned before, in the Space Quest series…
