Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility
Microsoft announced yesterday that a series of 200 game titles for the Xbox will be playable on the Xbox 360, from day one on November 22nd. The list is not what I’d call small, and the obvious greats are compatible as of now, such as Halo, Halo 2, KOTOR I and II, all GTA games, Forza Motor Sport, and Fable. Also, games that we all know and love: Barbie Horseback Adventures and Shamu’s Deep sea Adventures. We also have word that future release games such as Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland, Half-Life 2, and Pro Evolution Soccer 5.

“I can confidently say our goal remains to make as many games backward compatible as possible, we’ve been working hard to certify as many original Xbox games to work on Xbox 360 as possible. This process is a detailed procedure that we’re committed to, but it means that not every game is going to be ready on day one.” Says Todd Holmdahl (Corporate Vice for the Xbox Product Group).

Microsoft says that the major technical issues have been resolved, and they have the core emulator working, but only about 200 games compatible at the moment. The programmers have been working hard, testing each game all the way through for each Xbox game, and making adjustments to the emulator as needed.

The Xbox team has some good news for you guys. They say the emulation software is easy to get, and it’s completely free. You can obtain the software by means of three different ways. You can download it from Xbox live, download and burn a CD from Xbox.com, or have Microsoft mail you a disc with only shipping charges.

The software does require the 20 GB hard drive, only because the games have to run completely different functions then the 360 was built to deal with. Xbox games will be upgraded to a much improved 720p and 1080i, taking advantage of the Xbox 360’s anti-aliasing technology.

You can find a complete list of games that will be supported by the emulator from day one on the next page.
